32 Days Ponding Test at Indus Hospital Karachi: Ensuring Long-Term Leak Protection

The Indus Development Foundation (IDF) is a Canadian charity registered with the Canada Revenue Agency, created by influential Pakistani citizens.  They have created the Indus Hospital & Health Network (IHHN), which is designed to enable many sections of the population who currently cannot afford good healthcare to be able to access such care. There is no cost to these patients, and hospitals have been built in various areas of Pakistan.

Among the hospitals that the IDF has is the Indus Hospital in Karachi. It originally had 300 beds but is now being expanded to a total of 1000 beds.

Indus Hospital was considering CWS100 for the waterproofing of the exposed concrete areas in the new extension

The engineering team of Indus Hospital, together with the consultants, was looking for the best materials for concrete waterproofing and protection of
areas of exposed concrete, like rooftops, podiums, and ramps, and areas exposed to high abrasion, such as patients’ admission areas, car parks, etc. CWS100 is considered by Indus Hospital as a total solution for crack sealing, concrete waterproofing, and protection.

Indus Hospital engineers asked for a sample application and ponding test to be done to witness the performance of CWS100.
An area of the rooftop about 6-7 square meters was designated for the trial application.

The surface of the rooftop slab would have to be prepared for application

TRIAL AREA PREPARATION

The cold joint between the rooftop slab and adjacent wall was sealed against water leaks.

CWS100 APPLIED IN STATIC CRACKS, BEFORE APPLYING ON REST OF SURFACE

CWS100 was used to flood the numerous cracks meticulously.

CWS100 fills the cracks, no matter how deep they are, even going all the way through the slab.

CWS100 was sprayed on the trial area.

After the area became touch dry, it was watered three times – on the day of application and then on the two subsequent days

A small “dam” for the ponding purpose was made around the sprayed area, using cement blocks and waterproofing their joints, and then the whole trial application area was flooded with 7 cm of water.

DETECTING A LEAK ON DECEMBER 15th

On December 15th a small damp area was detected below the slab, from a crack that must have gone undetected during the preparation of the surface.

The leak sealed by itself in a few days when it was again inspected. CWS100 used the moisture of the leak, to create more insoluble gel and seal the crack.

UNDER WATER FOR 32 DAYS. STILL NO LEAK!

The following screenshot from video footage, shot on January 15th, 2024, which was 32 days after the start of the ponding test, shows the area still flooded with water. The middle finger of the examiner is fully submerged in 7 cm of water.
