Concrete Waterproofing South Africa

Concrete Waterproofing Systems (CWS) brings top-tier products and worldwide know-how to South Africa.  Our technology has proven its worth for years, in aggressive environments, tropical climates, hot and humid places and monsoon-ridden locations. This makes our products perfect for concrete waterproofing South Africa. In fact, rain and moisture actively contribute to the activation of chemical reaction with our products.

Protecting buildings and infrastructure projects for decades around the world, our technology extends their service life by disallowing corrosion of the rebar and sealing cracks, through which soluble chlorides and sulphates penetrate the matrix. Expanding our presence across South Africa, we seek to establish authorized applicators in various regions in the country. Whether you are a Consultant, Developer, Main Contractor looking for Concrete Waterproofing in South Africa, you are welcome to contact us.

If a seasoned applicator and you wish to have access to the latest know-how and technology as part of our network, please enquire about working under the guidance of our very experienced distributor in Johannesburg.

Concrete waterproofing buildings in South Africa

Concrete Waterproofing in southern Africa

Be it above or below ground, our technology has been used successfully throughout the country.

South Africa (Republiek van Suid-Afrika) lies mostly within the subtropical zone, featuring diverse climates like subtropical (east coast), Mediterranean (Western Cape), and temperate highland (interior plateau). Its varied geography and surrounding oceans create a climate patchwork, rather than purely tropical conditions, though parts of the eastern coast do experience tropical-like humidity.

This very diverse climate makes waterproofing a demanding part of every project:

As membranes are not designed for ponding water, the intense rainfall during wet season, means the amounts of ponding water will cause membranes to eventually – and inevitably – fail.

The cycling expansion and contraction in regions with intense heat quickly stresses the concrete.

The ambient salinity along the Indian Ocean coastline means the structures are exposed to airborne salinity sitting on them. Humidity and rain contribute to concrete carbonation and steel rebar corrosion.

Our products are designed to perform in such demanding conditions, without deteriorating with time. Used on concrete projects all over the world for years, they are designed for lifetime concrete protection and will safeguard the structures for their full design life… and beyond it.

CWS100 for above ground concrete waterproofing South Africa

CWS100 is a liquid CSH gel that is spray applied to cured concrete. It forms a fully integrated subsurface water barrier, as it penetrates 15-20mm under the surface. It seals existing static cracks up to 2.2mm, disallowing the ingress of water-soluble chlorides and other contaminants, which are the cause of steel rebar corrosion. For CWS100 to penetrate deep in the concrete and do its magic, the substrate must be structural concrete, properly cured and vibrated to full compaction. Also it must have at least 20MPa of compressive strength.

CWS100 is ideal for rooftop and above ground applications, especially if you are dealing with exposed concrete. No matter if it is a car park, a podium deck, the rooftop of a multi-story high rise or a bridge deck, CWS100 offers a wide array of benefits, such as:

Super-fast application
2.2mm static crack sealing
Concrete hardness increase, higher than granite
Thermal stress resistance
Lifetime performance with no reapplication or maintenance
Safe for use with drinking water (NSF/ANSI/CAN-61 certified)
Environmentally friendly
Impervious to UV radiation
Impervious to root penetration

CWS100 typical applications:

Rooftops and roof decks
Carpark roof decks
Podiums
Resorts
Shopping Malls
Water tanks and water collection/treatment plants

CWS Admix - for below ground concrete waterproofing Africa

Based on 45-year proven crystalline technology, CWS Admix improves on the basic concept and constitutes next generation integral waterproofing. A state-of-the-art crystalline admixture, with excellent performance on below grade projects, CWS Admix does equally well for water tanks and all systems of water collection and treatment, especially drinking water, since it carries several potability certifications, among which ANSI/NSF/61-CAN.

Not only it offers excellent watertightness for the interior of structures, but also intense anti-corrosion protection for the steel rebar, as it blocks the passage of water-soluble chlorides and other contaminants – responsible for corrosion initiation.

 CWS Admix Dosing

We add CWS Admix in the concrete mix, either at the batch plant – on the pre-mixer of the aggregates – which generally ensures even distribution prior to the addition of water, or very conveniently on-site, by adding it in the mixing truck prior to pouring, in cases when the heavy traffic of cities – such as Pretoria, Johannesburg or Cape Town – which can delay concrete truck to the site, causing concern about concrete hardening in the truck.

If you add it to the mixing truck, it is advisable to continue mixing for at least 10 minutes at high revolutions, prior to pouring.

Integral waterproofing

We often call Crystalline Admixture technology  “integral” , as the admixture is dispersed evenly throughout the concrete mass, creating crystals in the porosity and capillaries of the concrete – as a result of its  hydrophilic properties – that block water from penetrating.

This method of achieving concrete watertightness is the most trustworthy solution, for successful below-grade waterproofing today.

Benefits of CWS Admix

Has testing to prove it resists hydrostatic pressure to 14 bars of pressure or 140m of waterhead, which is equivalent to a 40 storey building.  This is especially beneficial in places like Gauteng & surrounding Highveld areas, that often have high water tables.

Speeds up construction time significantly, as we add it to the concrete during production, so it saves all the delays from waiting for the concrete to cure and remove the formwork and then proceed to install membranes.

Requires no manual labor, to waterproof the structure.

Seals current and future static cracks in the concrete, rather than just lining the sides of the capillaries of the matrix as pore blockers typically do.

Needs no reapplication, no replacement and no periodic inspection or maintenance.

Unlike membranes – nobody can puncture, de-bond or tear an integral admixture. It is just as impossible as trying to take sugar out of a birthday cake. Nor can it be damaged by trades during application or during backfilling.

Other benefits

Membranes typically get damaged during backfilling, and we  only discover the damage after the backfilling has concluded and water starts appearing inside the structure. But then it is too late for remedy. Oftentimes, such buildings  resolve to using underground pumps throughout their lifetime. This cannot happen when crystalline technology has been properly used.

Accepts hydrostatic pressure on both positive and negative side.

Maximizes the building footprint – which leads to more usable surface for developers – because it allows construction right to the edge of the site, without the need to leave space for applicators to descend and apply membranes. Not only this means smaller excavation and faster backfilling, but also better return on investment for the owner.

CWS Admix, easily waterproofs the most complex concrete surface shapes  In such cases, traditional membranes fail, because of the number of cuts and patches needed to cover protrusions, sharp corners and unusual shapes, resulting in leaks from poor workmanship.

CWS Admix is one of the most friendly crystalline admixtures in the market. It contains no carcenogenic materials or volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and carries several approvals for drinking water safe use, among which NSF/ANSI/CAN-61, the world standard for drinking water safety.

Concrete Protection

Apart from ensuring dry interiors of structures, CWS100 and CWS Admix offer intense concrete protection, against degradation from waterborne contaminants such as chlorides that damage structures. The chlorides that enter the matrix initiate rebar corrosion and subsequent spalling. South Africa has numerous wharfs and marine structures along its 2.798km of coastline. These structures need protection against degradation that salinity brings. CWS100 and CWS Admix have protected dozens of marine structures and wharf installations against chloride-induced degradation. The structures now enjoy a far longer service life than one usually expects.
